Course Description
OIL100 - Coastal Oil Spills: Tactical and Operations Level - 40.00 Hours

This 40-hour core course emphasizes oil spills in estuarine and coastal environments. It is designed for persons in industry, the regulatory community and the emergency response area who may be required to respond to an oil-spill incident.
This course utilizes lecture, multimedia presentations and practical hands-on exercises to provide students with essential information and training needed to effectively manage a spill response operation. Students assume leadership roles and direct simulated response operations under the supervision of the instructors.

- Contingency planning and response team training
- Security, damage claims and public relations
- Movement, containment and cleanup of oil
- Boom and skimmer design
- Shoreline protection, cleanup and restoration
- Reporting and documenting oil spills
- Communications equipment
- Oil recovery from soil and oily debris disposal
- Oil-spill contractors and cooperatives
- Containing and recovering oil on surface water
- Sorbents and chemical agents
- Preventing oil spills
- Aerial surveillance

Class size: minimum 6 students
Participation in this class will require a signed Risk Release on the first day of class.
